Exploring Mdina – Malta

About Mdina

With yellow color like buildings and a small population of around 300 people, Mdina is known as the Silent City and it used to be the Capital of Malta.

After Medina was no longer the capital, it turned into a ghost city where no cars are allowed inside (except for the ones who reside in town) creating an extremely peaceful atmosphere around its narrow streets.

This medieval town is a mix of Norman and Baroque architecture and still the home of many historical monumental buildings, most used nowadays as private residences.

My visits to Mdina

I had the great opportunity to visit the silent city twice, both visits were totally different. On my first time in Mdina, we saw the city on a horse carriage and my second time, I just walked around and had more time to enjoy its peaceful energy.

History that inspire

My first visit made me fall in love with the city, I felt completely transported to ancient times. Its silence almost feels like an empty city, but full of character.

Wherever you look you will find original beauty and if you are a fan of history this town will certainly inspire you. I adored the residence’s doors, they were so unique!

From Valletta to Mdina Using Public Transportation

The buses in Valletta are pretty straightforward, so to go to Mdina you can take a bus from the Valletta terminal.

Buses number 51, 52, and 53 will take you to Mdina for only a 2.60 euros ticket (per person), taking 30 to 40 minutes to get there.

Access Malta Public Transport for more info.

Seeing Mdina on a Horse Carriage

Seeing Mdina on a Horse Carriage was great fun. It is a different way to get around, but very popular in Malta. They actually take you to all touristic points and nearby cities.

The drivers are stopping often and giving you good few minutes to take pictures, you can arrange specifically locations you wanna see, as well how long you spend in certain places.

Our experience using the Horse carriages to see Mdina was also a way to see everything in a shorter period, since that day our trip didn’t start as earlier as we planned, this way saved us some time.

Horse carriages are not expensive in Malta, costing around10 euros, (depending on where you wanna go).

St. Pauls Cathedral

Besides a pleasant walk around this quiet town, a great place to see is the St. Pauls Cathedral, located in the main square of Mdina.

This Roman Catholic Cathedral is dedicated to the Apostle St. Paul and It was founded in the 12th Century.

What differs this main square from others, it’s how quiet it is. Normally main squares are full of people, street markets, is often a busy sight of a town, but not this main square. Here, you are to feel the history of the city and admire its calmness.

Pallazzo Falson

Another main point to be seen is the Pallazo Falzon: a building that holds an incredible collection of antiques, as well, Mdina Dangeous, located in the main entrance gate to the city, its secret underground passages reveal a dark side of Maltese history. Mdina Narrow Streets

I am kind of suspect to talk about Mdina, since always I have loved narrow streets and alleyways, love old towns and I like visiting a place to discover, even if that means a long walking day.

I am always up for the challenge, but if you don’t enjoy walking much and you are more for a quiet afternoon sitting at a restaurant, don’t worry, the city has a lot of bars, cafes and restaurants where you can seat, have a lovely meal or coffee, while admiring great views from the highest point of the island.
