Exploring Dragon Cave- Island of Majorca

Cuevas Drach

About Cuevas Del Drach

Located on the east coast of Majorca, in the city of Porto Cristo, Cuevas Del Drach (Dragon cave) are four large caves expanding to a depth of 25 m and reaching approximately 4 km in length. This incredible subterranean world is one of the main tourist attractions to visit when in Majorca.

The four caves, named Black Cave, White Cave, Cave of Luis Salvador, and Cave of the French, were naturally formed by water pushing against its entrance by the Mediterranean Sea and they are all connected to each other.

Palma de Majorca has numerous attractions, but seeing Cuevas Del Drach came to mind by a friend of mine who knew about the place and told was how wonderful was. It is necessary to have few spare hours to visit it as it is relatively a long trip.

Transportation and tickets price

To reach this outstanding natural beauty, we took a taxi from Porto Pi, where most cruise ships dock. The two ways trip costed us 40 euros per person, worth every penny. It was about an hour driving to the city of Porto Cristo.
The entrance is priced at 15 Euros per person, the tour around the caves is of an hour duration.

Cave Attractions

During your tour around the caves, photos are allowed with flash off, videos are ok as well, but the cave’s formation cannot be touched, it is forbidden.

Watch a concert

Besides exploring the caves, you are welcome to watch a concert, held by a quartet of musicians composed by 2 violinists, a cello, and a harmonium. The show is only 10 minutes, pictures and videos are not allowed, in order to don’t disturb other visitors.

Inside lakes and boat trip

Cuevas Del Drack has several lakes inside, you also have the option of a 10 minutes boat ride on the lake Martel, considered one of the largest underground lakes in the world. The boat has a Nordic look and the trip is really nice too, although inside the cave is a bit dark, the boat trip in recommended.

Sky of Rocks

My most memorable image which I brought with me from my visit, was when at a certain point in the cave, on the rock formations in the roof above me: It was not just rock formations but in fact, a sky full of stars and they shined too! I managed to get pictures of this interesting sky of rocks but honestly, the feeling of admiring that was wonderful.

Unfortunately, I’ve been there only once, I haven’t had the chance to go again, but it was truly remarkable. The caves are really high, each part of it has a distinctive type of art, It’s like being in a whole new world. The caves have a specific sound, you can almost hear the rocks, the sound of cold water drops dripping and sliding down its walls…

I believe I came back to the ship with almost a thousand pictures and maybe over 30 videos recorded on my phone and camera, it is a magic scenery nature created on its own.

I remember wishing that the tour was longer. You have a tour duration of an hour, you must follow the path designated and remain close to the group, cause you can definitely get lost in such a huge space like that.

Other Activities

The place also offers tourists some snack bars where you can buy something to drink and eat, there are also some areas for a picnic if you wish to and some souvenir stores as well. I recall to have bought a Dragon’s egg, it says if you put it in cold water and leave it there for what I think, 3 to 4 days, a dragon will be born. Well, It worked, we still have our little dragon.

Conclusion

Cuevas Del Drach is a must-see when staying in Majorca, this is on top of my list of favorite places to visit, therefore I am a hundred percent sure it will become yours too.

I will let you here with some more pictures taken during my time in the caves, but even though I had some great shots, make sure to check out this stunning underground beauty for yourself.
