Visiting Popeye’s movie live set

Popeye Village-Malta

Our mornings in Valleta

The Port of Valletta- Malta, used to be our weekly destination. With the City Center being just a few minutes away from where cruise ships normally dock, even when tired from work, we could go out and get some fresh air in this Historical and beautiful City.

I do remember the Malta mornings, when we normally depart at 4 pm, giving us crew, enough time to visit the incredible sights of Valletta. One of those mornings we had arranged with colleagues to go visit a place called: Popeye Village.

Popeye’s comic stripes

I am pretty sure you are familiar with the famous cartoon, Popeye the sailor man, who loves spinach, and his girlfriend Olivia Oyl.

At first, I was surprised to learn that Popeye had also a movie made, based on comic strips. The movie was an American musical comedy from 1980, produced by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney; this place was specifically built as a movie set, but later on, converted into an attraction fun Park.

Alive scenario

The movie set even years later remains still alive, when entering the Park, you are surrounded by colorful and happy vibes, movie characters are singing and dancing, inviting people from the public to join; their costumes are really well made, and you can’t fail to recognize Olivia, Popeye and Blutos the villain.

Prices and transportation to Popeye Village

To visit this interesting attraction doesn’t cost you much and it isn’t very far. As soon as you are out of the ship, on the way to Valletta city center, you will find many available taxis and the prices are negotiable.

As we were a group of 6 people, our taxi driver agreed to take us for 15 Euros per person both ways; in our case was necessary two taxis.

The trip takes around 30 minutes and Taxi drivers can wait for you. We had over an hour to enjoy the park and the set is not so big, giving you enough time to see everything and take amazing pictures.

Using the public transportation in Valletta

Another way to reach Popeye Village is by bus. You can use the various bus lines in Malta, if you are in Valletta, you can catch the bus number 42, which takes over an hour to get there, but it is the most cost-effective option for 1 to 3 euros.

If you have spare time or even visiting Malta for more than just a day, is no bad idea to use the local transportation.

Renting a car

If you are confident enough to drive in a foreign city you can also rent a car and drive to Popeye’s village. Bear in mind that the driver’s seat is on the right side. The prices to rent a car can vary from 10 to 40 euros per day.

Here are some of the places you can get a car rent from Malta or Valletta :

Stivala Rentals, CB Rentals Malta, Aquarius Rent a Car, Malta First Car Hire, Smart Car Rentals, Merlin Car Hire

Park attractions

The park hosts different activities throughout the year, from barbecues to dinners, including audio-video shows with clips from the actual film and set construction, this attraction takes place in the village’s lower complex, in a cinema that can fit around 50 people and shows are every hour.

Boat Trip around Anchor Bay

During your visit to Popeye’s Village, if weather permits, you can take a boat trip around Anchor Bay, where you will admire and photograph a beautiful view of the Village from the sea, it is a short trip with a duration of 15 minutes worth the try.

Best time to visit the village and Tickets Information

Entrances to the Park can vary from 10 to 15 Euros during the year, of course, I would best advise you to visit the village during summer, to fully enjoy all entertainment offered, but a visit during winter will also be enjoyable, the scenarios are very realistic and the place does transport you to the movie scenes.

Our experience in the Park

Unfortunately, we couldn’t take the boat trip due to the weather, but we went around the bay and got good shots of the gorgeous views. Our group was also offered to get a picture taken and it turned out a lovely souvenir.
You can also refresh yourself with free alcoholic and non-alcoholic shots known as Popeye’s energy drink, pretty tasty too.

Popeye Village also has a souvenir shop, where you can bring cute memories from your visit.

Conclusion

I highly recommend visiting this place I would say there is no visiting Malta without seeing this unique cartoon-like Village.

You are not just visiting a fun park, but a postcard itself, a live scenario of your cartoon childhood, a classic brought to life.

I hope my pictures can show you a bit more about our experience there and bring you the same feeling we had when this adventure took place.
